“This is a heavy topic that I’m still pushing through. One thing that I found that could actually lower costs, increase access, and diversify care has to do with Certificate-of-need laws. These laws let existing hospital systems sit on the boards that decide who gets to compete with them. That’s the trap that keeps them in control of costs and services. Repeal it! Opening the market would force those big systems to compete on price and access. They either adjust, or they lose patients to clinics that can do it cheaper and closer to home. If elected, my idea is to make federal healthcare dollars available to states that open their markets to competition, so communities and new clinics can build and expand without asking permission from the hospital systems/ industry boards that already dominate the market. Nebraska gets the money if it opens the door. Let’s make an incentive for growth and services to the people, not a punishment.”
